Our Memories of Abby Marlatt |
|||||

Note: The opinions expressed on this page are those of the writers. I only met Abby once, as I'm a relative newcomer to the church. I met her when the quilt was unfurled, as she sat in the congregation, appearing to be a weakened hurt body. But her story moved me. She was a fighter for social justice causes in Lexington when the civil rights movement didn't even have a name yet. She stood unflinchingly for what is good and right in the world. As I walked out that day, I took her hand and thanked her. I thanked her for her service to the cause of humanity, and pledged that I would carry on her work. In my prejudice, I had expected a platitude and a weak response. Instead, she stared at me with steely resolve and said, "Good." One word to convey the intensity of her passion for human rights even in the twilight of her life. That sort of passion ought to be commended and remembered fondly. She was friend to many for years, but to some who only barely knew her, she stood as an icon. -Steven Taylor If you are a member or former member of UUCL and have memories of and/or thoughts about Abby Marlatt you would like to share here, please email them to your webmaster.
