Welcoming Congregation

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington, (UUCL), welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and their families. We are a caring, open-minded religious community that celebrates diversity. We believe that our commitment to “affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person” applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  GLBT persons participate fully in all aspects of our congregational life.

Our ministry to and support of the GLBT community takes many forms, including the following:

  • Our Interweave group provides a safe place for GLBT people and their straight allies to socialize, find support, and discuss GLBT issues.

  •  For the past 4 years we have hosted a “Pride Prom”, providing an alternative prom opportunity for GLBT youth and their supporters.

  • We participate in the annual Pride Festival.

  • We just renovated a couple of rest rooms to be "gender neutral."

  • We have made donations from our “Give Away the Plate” program to help support the Gay Straight Alliance, a group promoting tolerance in local high schools regarding sexual orientation.

  • At our 2008 annual congregational meeting, church members voted to publicly support the right of same sex couples to marry.  On Oct. 12, 2008, Coming out Sunday, we hung a banner at our church entrance proclaiming our support.  About two months later we were informed that the banner violated an ordinance about temporary signage, and removed it.

UUCL is a Welcoming Congregation of our denomination, the Unitarian Universalist Association.  The Welcoming Congregation Program is designed to help UU congregations enhance their welcome of all people, and to become more inclusive towards GLBT people in particular.   Several years ago we had a series of workshops and discussions, and then our members voted to officially become a Welcoming Congregation.

We invite you to browse our website to get to know us better. If you don't know very much about us, you might want to start with our visitors' page.  And please visit with us during our Sunday service or at any of our other activities. You will be welcome!
