Being Democratic

Our fifth principle states that we affirm and promote “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.”

In the spirit of this principle, Unitarian Universalists practice what is called “congregational polity.”

In short, this means that every decision a congregation makes, from calling a new minister to maintaining the building, rests entirely with the members. Realistically, the congregation elects a Board of Directors to make fiduciary decisions and hires a staff to manage the day-to-day operations.

Being congregationalists also means that we are entirely self-supporting! It is up to all of our members to ensure the church continues to operate and grow by giving generously.

UUCL’s Board is composed of nine Directors, including a President, President-Elect, and Past President. The Board of Directors is elected by the congregation. We also have a Treasurer and Secretary, appointed by the Board. Directors’ terms are staggered, and new officers come on board in July of each year. Board meetings are held via Zoom the third Monday of each month at 6:30 PM, unless otherwise indicated on the church calendar.
