The Gift of You

All members and friends of UUCL are encouraged to be involved and contribute their time, both at the church and in the community at large.

Volunteering at UUCL

There are always several committees and teams that help make the church run smoothly and ensure that UUCL is a welcoming place. If you need help discerning how your gifts can help our community thrive, contact us and we will help you find your role!

UUCL Teams & Committees

  • Our campus has a Building Team whose work seeks to keep track of maintenance needs - interiorly and for the exterior - will schedule service consultations for building work and operations, is on campus to guide consultants as work is performed when necessary, and raises important building needs when discovered. Meetings occur once a month to discuss completed projects and any future work that may arise. If any financial concerns are raised regarding building work, those concerns are brought to the Board of Directors.

  • The Endowment Management Team is responsible for investing and managing UUCL’s endowment fund. Membership on the team is by appointment from the Board of Directors.

  • The Fundraising Team brainstorms and plans different events and activities to raise additional money for UUCL’s general operating expenses, outside of the annual pledge campaign. Volunteers work directly with staff and other UUCL groups to conduct successful fundraisers.

  • The Hospitality Team arranges for coffee to be available each Sunday morning, and sometimes prepares or brings breakfast snacks, as well. This team of volunteers also ensures our kitchen is well-stocked and tidy at the end of the day. Additionally helping out with decorating or food preparation for events and fundraisers, this group is a great fit for anyone who enjoys cooking or party planning!

  • The Membership Team guides visitors through the membership process by organizing our Pathway to Membership classes. They also help new members find their role in the church that is both involved and engaging. The Membership Team might be right for you if you are passionate about helping people find a place at UUCL.

  • The Nominating Committee is a group of volunteers who are elected by the congregation each year, similar to the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee’s primary responsibility is to select candidates to fill open positions within the Board and the Nominating Committee itself. UUCL’s NomCom collects information from candidates and prepares ballots for every election, and also presents awards to members who have made substantial contributions to our church or community.

  • The Religious Exploration Team volunteers to lead or assist with classes and activities for UUCL’s children and youth, under the guidance of our Religious Exploration Director. Parents are encouraged to volunteer and participate in many of our lifespan programs. There are many ways to support RE, such as bringing snacks, helping with setup or cleanup, playing an instrument, storytelling, and so on! All RE leaders and guides must pass a background check and actively participate in the church for at least six months before volunteering to work directly with children.

  • The Seven Acres Team is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of our grounds. Through defining projects and organizing workdays, they ensure our property is welcoming and well-kempt. There is always a need for people to help out in a variety of ways. The Seven Acres Group might be right for you if you like hands-on work, gardening, or gathering with volunteers for large projects.

  • The Stewardship Team leads our pledge campaign each year. These volunteers communicate the importance of pledges to UUCL members and work directly with the Board and Treasurer to collect funds for our annual budget.

  • The UUCL Worship Team assists the Minister with our worship services, and helps plan and lead worship services on those Sundays when our Minister is not in the pulpit. Participation is upon invitation of the Minister, and can range from sharing readings and music ideas, to other innovative and interactive worship practices.

  • The Welcoming Team has a simple mission: to ensure UUCL is a welcoming place! The first people you meet at UUCL are often our Ushers or Greeters, who can answer your questions, direct you to the right place, and offer information about our church. This is a great way to meet people and have a simple but important role in the church. If you enjoy meeting new people, the Welcoming Team might be right for you if you can commit to helping out at least once a month.

  • The Worship Aesthetics Team decorates our chalice table for service, and each volunteer usually takes one Sunday a month. Sometimes the designs reflect the theme of the service, and sometimes they make a beautiful arrangement. The chalice table is a focal point for meditation and reflection. Each decorator brings a completely different vision and set of skills.

UUCL Involvement in the Community

The UUCL BUILD Justice Ministry Team focuses on social justice issues in the Lexington area. UUCL is an official member of the group BUILD (Building a United Interfaith Lexington through Direct-action). As such, many UUCL members work together with the members of several other local organizations to pursue justice for issues that matter to Lexington.

Kentucky Refugee Ministries is an organization which resettles immigrants in our local area. Many UUCL members are involved with KRM - donating food, money, furniture, housewares, clothing, and their personal time to help with the complicated process of resettling refugees from various other countries.

Mentoring at Cardinal Valley Elementary School is a rewarding way to make a difference in a child’s life. Many UUCL members have become involved with this program, which is organized through the school. The majority of students at CVE are minorities from low-income families, and this program offers them the opportunity for one-on-one time with a mentor who cares. Mentors sometimes provide music, crafts, homework assistance, or just play games and have fun! Mentors also arrange fundraisers and drives at different points throughout the year, depending on requests from the school.

The Kentucky Unitarian Universalist Justice Action Network (KUUJAN) is a network helping KY UUs engage in activism regarding social justice issues state-wide. Each month, many UUCL members gather online with other UUs from around the state to connect, learn, and act.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is an organization that supports volunteers seeking to influence climate policy. The CCL aligns well with UUCL's 7th UU Principle, which calls us to respect the interdependent web of existence. Many UUs are involved with this organization on local, national, and international levels.
