Habitat and Range:

  • found in about every Kentucky county

  • likes well-drained, nutrient dense soil

  • prefers full or partial sun

Features:

  • one of the tallest trees in the Eastern forests

  • it is in the magnolia family; not really a poplar

  • both the leaf and flower are tulip shaped

  • birds and mammals eat the seeds

  • valuable for carbon sequestration

History:

  • it is the state tree of Kentucky

  • Native Americans made dugout canoes from the very straight trunk
